Description
The red-eared slider(Trachemys scripta elegans) may also be known as the red-eared terrapin. It is one of the most popular pet turtles, and also one of the most invasive turtles for that reason. It is native from the Midwest (where this photo was taken) through the central southern U.S and into Mexico. The name refers to the red stripe near where the ears would be. This turtle is a member of the Emydidae family. The water plant appears to be a Ludwigia variety. Image searches will produce inaccurate and conflicting results. Text data also appears to be conflicting, with multiple state and national sources listing conflicting information. In fact, plant taxonomoists and botanists are still arguing about classifications of the species. It could be Ludwigia palustris (marsh seedbox), which is native to the US, or it could be a non-native Ludwigia species.
