Description
I thought I was out of view, but maybe not. Carpenter bees (genus Xylocopa) are sometimes mistaken for bumblebees; their coloration and size can be similar. Bumblebees have yellow and black hair on their bodies - they're "fuzzy". Carpenter bees have a shiny black lower abdomen. It's difficult to tell the different species apart because of their similarity. Large Beardtongue (Penstemon grandiflorus) is attractive to bees, as you can see. Large beardtongue is a perennial and may also self-seed in appropriate conditions. It may also be known as Canterbury Bells or Wild Foxglove.
